South East Region Indoor Driving Trial

The annual RDA South East Region’s Indoor Driving Trial took place at Sands Farm, Warnham on October 11th. Unfortunately the weather was miserable but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the drivers.Twenty drivers from five different Groups, Goodwood, Happy Landings, Heron’s Ghyll, Kipling County and Stella Hancock, took part. These were split into three classes, Novice, Intermediate and Open.

Each Driver started by driving a dressage test judged by Sara Howe and Pat Sowerby on precision and paces. They then went to a second arena and drove a course of cones. In the afternoon two obstacles were built in the indoor school and were driven against the clock. The Novice and Intermediates drove them once and the open class twice.

For the first time this year some drivers who had passed an assessment were able to drive with a single set of reins with their RDA Whip standing on the backstep.

The Novice class was won by Barbara Westbury driving Sandy from Goodwood Group. This was the first time Barbara had competed in any driving competition. Second was Linda Clark driving Smokey with Josie Cyster driving Dennis, third both from Kipling County.

Sally Scott who was second last year went one better this year and won the Intermediate class, driving Prince from Kipling County. Second and third were Greg Cooper and Percy Cox both driving Domino from Heron’s Ghyll.

The Open class was won by last year’s Intermediate winner Tracey Spencer driving Anthea Shipley’s lovely cob Bertie Basset from Heron’s Ghyll. Second was Beth Allsopp driving Prince from Kipling County and third was Sue Sherlock driving her own Serenade from Happy Landings.

Jane Cowan of our sponsor Cowan Architects very kindly presented the rosettes and trophies at the end of a very successful day.
