RDA AGM focuses on Achievement and Success

In this Olympic and Paralympic year, it seems only fitting that the theme of this year’s RDA AGM should be Achievement and Success. The meeting will explore the different ways and areas that RDA recognises and celebrates achievement and success.

This year’s speakers include the Chairman of ParalympicsGB, Tim Reddish and Head of Therapy, Denise Robertson.

“I hope as many Groups as possible will be able to send representatives to this year’s AGM,” said RDA Chief Executive Ed Bracher. “In particular we are encouraging participants to come along as well as volunteers. The AGM is a great opportunity to find out more about the national organisation, to catch up with friends and meet the National Office team – do come if you can.”

RDA AGM – Friday 16 November 2012, 10:30 to 15:00, Saddlers Hall, London

Anne Bullen exhibition opens in London 18 Sept to 4 Oct

Anne Bullen was a naturally talented artist, illustrator and horsewoman. Her romantic and unique style using pen and ink, pencil, charcoal, gouache, watercolour and oils demonstrated her artistic versatility. During her relatively short life she illustrated over forty books, choreographed mounted displays across the country and founded The Catherston Stud. Her ability to inspire others has been borne out by three of her six children competing in eight Olympic Games.

This exhibition of over 80 original sketches, paintings and illustrations commemorates 100 years since her birth.

RDA riders selected for ParalympicsGB

Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) is celebrating the announcement of the Paralympics GB team for para-equestrian dressage. Of the five riders chosen to represent Great Britain, four started their equestrian careers with the support of RDA.

Multiple Gold medalist, Lee Pearson is an RDA Honory Life Vice-President and was supported by RDA early in his equestrian career. Sophie Christiansen started riding with RDA for therapy and today trains at South Buckinghamshire RDA. Debbie Criddle rides at the Conquest RDA Centre in Somerset and Natasha Baker started riding with RDA on the recommendation of her Physiotherapist.

“Congratulations to the whole team,” said RDA Chief Executive, Ed Bracher. “This selection will mean so much to RDA riders and volunteers everywhere, who can feel rightly proud of the part they play in helping people like Sophie and Lee get all the way to the top of their sport. RDA’s 500 Groups across the UK provide opportunities for 28,000 people with disabilities to enjoy and benefit from equestrian activities – and to find out just how much they can achieve.”

Physiotherapy Survey Update

It’s not too late for Groups to return the Physiotherapy Survey. The deadline was Monday 2nd July but responses are still being inputted and every response is valuable.

Denise Robertson, Head of Therapy said, ‘As of 5th July we’ve received 168 returns, which is a good and we are grateful to those Groups who responded promptly. However, more replies would be even better. A survey is only as good as the data provided for it.’

Send in your survey and make sure your experience and views help build the full picture.

Four Honours for RDA in Jubilee Year

RDA is celebrating following the announcement that four of its volunteers have been recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours. Ro Pudden, RDA Senior Instructor and National Equine Welfare Officer; Mary Axford, Chairman of Treborth RDA; Barbara Johnstone, Group Instructor at Ravelrig RDA and Annette Dorsey, Trustee at Harrogate RDA have all been awarded MBEs in recognition of their outstanding work for the charity.

Ro Pudden offered her thanks “to the horses and helpers who make it all happen,” and said the most difficult thing has been keeping the news quiet. “I just wanted to tell everyone,” she said. Barbara Johnstone’s MBE comes hot on the heels of her Inspiring Volunteer of the Year Award, presented last week by Volunteer Edinburgh.

“Congratulations to all four volunteers,” said RDA Chief Executive, Ed Bracher. “It is always great to see RDA recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, and in this Jubilee year it seems particularly special. Annette, Ro, Mary and Barbara are all long-serving RDA volunteers, who continue to make a difference to the lives of hundreds of people with disabilities every year. These Honours are so well deserved and I wish them all well.”

Ravenswood Riding & Driving Group in Berkshire is having a double celebration. Not only has the Group been gifted a new driving and riding pony called Missy, but local Saddler, James Turner, has kindly provided her with a new saddle for a very special price in recognition of the amazing work of the Group. “Everything about Missy seems to be lucky!” says Vanessa Gordon at Ravenswood. “She’s a great driving pony, but without a saddle we wouldn’t be able to make use of her for riding as well.
