BBC Lifeline Appeal to feature RDA

BBC One Logo

RDA will be the featured charity for the first BBC Lifeline Appeal of 2016, to be aired on BBC1, Sunday 17 January at 16:15 pm. The Appeal will be presented by TV and Radio presenter Anneka Rice. Repeated on Wednesday 20 Jan at 13:00, the programme features 5 year old RDA rider, Amy and Paralympian Sophie Christiansen. Both rider stories illustrate the transformative effect horse riding has had and why donations are so important to enable the charity to help even more people.

During the programme, viewers will meet Amy and her parents, who offer an emotional account of Amy’s first few weeks as a premature baby and her eventual diagnosis of Global Development Delay, Sensory Processing Disorder and core stability weakness. Mum Sarah describes Amy’s daily challenges as well as the amazing impact RDA has had since she started riding just one year ago.

“She is SO much stronger ,” says Sarah, “and can now walk longer distances and is learning how to walk up and down stairs safely. She is more stable when playing with other children so hopefully sometime soon she will be able to join her friends outside in the school playground.”

Paralympian Sophie Christiansen discusses how she started riding for physiotherapy aged 7 and how RDA has given her the opportunity to achieve so much in life – not just as an elite equestrian but also the confidence to gain her Masters in Maths and go on to carve out a successful career.

Anneka Rice explains her involvement with the charity and why she was so keen to front the Appeal: “I first became aware of RDA when I helped to build an indoor riding school for one of the charity’s groups in London 21 years ago as part of the programme Challenge Anneka. I was privileged to meet some of the amazing riders, volunteers and horses, and to understand the lasting difference riding can make.

“For the children and adults I have spoken to, RDA is an incredibly special place, where friendships are made, where no one is treated differently and where disability fades into the background. That’s why I’m proud to support this Lifeline Appeal, and why I hope you will feel able to donate what you can to help many more disabled people find out what they can achieve.”

The Appeal opens for donations on Thursday 14 January and remains open for a month. Visit the programme page:

Triple gold Paralympian, Sophie Christiansen, wishes good luck to Slough residents

Sophie C at the Paralympic Ball2012

As the next winning postcode for players of People’s Postcode Lottery Millions is announced as ‘SL3’, Paralympic equestrian, Sophie Christiansen MBE has sent a special message of good luck to lottery players in the area.

Sophie started her Paralympic journey at Slough’s local branch of Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) – one of the good causes supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

“Good luck to players of People’s Postcode Lottery in Slough,” says Sophie. “With your help thousands of children and adults with disabilities are being given the chance to reach their full potential through horse riding and carriage driving at RDA.”

RDA uses horses and ponies to deliver life changing therapy to disabled adults and children all over the UK. South Bucks RDA, based in Fulmer, supports over 100 local riders ever week.

As well as Sophie’s message, RDA will be bringing its special horseshoe to the town to help boost players’ luck before the weekend’s draw. “It’s just a bit of fun,” says RDA Fundraiser Sal Atkinson, “but we do want people to understand the huge impact their support has on charities like ours. Players of People’s Postcode Lottery in Slough might not realise the far-reaching benefits that they bring to children and adults at our riding groups like South Bucks RDA. With their help, we can provide this vital community resource to more deserving people.”

The Postcode Millions Event, where People’s Postcode Lottery will announce the winning postcode in the Slough area, takes place on 27 June at Upton Court Park at 10:45.

People’s Postcode Lottery awards RDA an additional £25k

We are delighted to confirm that players of People’s Postcode Lottery have awarded RDA an additional £25,000 in funding.  Since the Lottery’s launch in 2008 an amazing £58.6 million has so far been awarded to charities and good causes. The support has made a massive difference to hundreds of communities with funding awarded to numerous grass roots groups and local projects as well as national and international charities.

This additional award will allow RDA to support more Group projects and activities in Great Britain in 2015.

RDA Group projects already supported by players in 2014 include:

Middleton Park RDA Yorkshire purchased a new Driving Carriage. The group had a waiting list and the new carriage will provide an extra 4 sessions, reducing the waiting list by 20 people per week.

Tyne and Wear Group have installed new lighting for their outdoor arena.  This has made it possible to offer more rides during the darker days, creating an additional 600 sessions in the first year alone.

Mount Pleasant Group, South Wales needed a new riding arena to continue sessions during the winter months.  The group have 25 young people on the waiting list. The part funding for the new arena will allow the group to provide more sessions and reduce the waiting list.

Quest Group, South East received funding to buy a new pony which will enable the group to run two more classes per week and reduce the current waiting list which at present includes 26 disabled riders.

Dyneley Group, North West, the new arena will allow them to run a longer season on a safe, weatherproof surface. Sessions have previously been cancelled due to unsafe, slippery conditions.

Gareloch Group, Scotland set up their Stable Management therapy sessions to cope with the increased demand for sessions for disabled people who wish to work with horses but who are unable to ride.  At least 20 new places will be created as a result of the new Stable Management project.

Penniwells Group, London, the new Saddle Club has made it possible for 20 more riders to take part in activities over a 10 week programme. The group have a waiting list of 50 riders and the new club will reduce the list.

Travel grants were awarded to 8 RDA Groups to enable them to travel to the 2014 National Championships in Hartpury.

Other projects funded by players include; RDA Holidays, trailer transport for the mechanical horse, the volunteer recruitment memory stick, the 2014 photographic competition, the publication of the new Handbook and Impact Report and the Yard Health Plan chart.

The news of the additional £25,000 was announced at People’s Postcode Lottery’s annual Charity Gala held in Edinburgh on Wednesday 28th January 2015. Over £3 million in additional funding for supported charities was announced at the Gala. Dame Kelly Holmes joined 300 guests to celebrate the impact that players of People’s Postcode Lottery have on charities and good causes.

Wing Yip celebrates Chinese Year of the Horse with RDA

Wing Yip Press Release Photo

To mark the start of Chinese New Year of the Horse on 31st January 2014, Wing Yip Director Brian Yip presented a cheque for £1,000 to RDA during a celebratory lunch at the Wing Yip Centre in Nechells on Monday (27th January). The donation will be split between the Lowlands Farm RDA and the RDA National Office.

“Horses play a great role in providing therapy and enjoyment to people with disabilities so it seems fitting that as we celebrate the Year of the Horse we recognise the role the horse plays in people’s lives through a donation to the RDA,” explained Wing Yip Director Brian Yip.

Sal Atkinson from RDA added: “We rely heavily on businesses like Wing Yip for charitable donations and we are extremely grateful for their generosity. Being in contact with horses and riding is proven to be extremely therapeutic for people with disabilities and we see some really successful results. Donations like this enable us to continue this important work into the future and we hope that the Chinese New Year of the Horse brings us lots of luck with fundraising.”

The 15 day Chinese New Year Festival is the most important celebration in the Chinese calendar and will kick off on 31st January. Celebrations are taking place across the UK with Wing Yip hosting dragon dances and promotions across its four superstores in Birmingham, Manchester, Cricklewood and Croydon. To find out more visit

RDA riders selected for ParalympicsGB

Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) is celebrating the announcement of the Paralympics GB team for para-equestrian dressage. Of the five riders chosen to represent Great Britain, four started their equestrian careers with the support of RDA.

Multiple Gold medalist, Lee Pearson is an RDA Honory Life Vice-President and was supported by RDA early in his equestrian career. Sophie Christiansen started riding with RDA for therapy and today trains at South Buckinghamshire RDA.
