767 entrants for biggest ever RDA National Championships

Championships visited by Carl Hester, Ricky Balshaw and actor Tony Head

The RDA National Championships saw 767 entrants compete over a packed weekend, which featured RDA showjumping for the first time and a demonstration of grassroots to world class Para Dressage by the BEF. For the second year running, there were representatives from every one of RDA’s 18 Regions across the UK and Ireland, with 96 RDA Groups taking part.

Judges praised the exceptionally high standard of entrants at every level, noting the year on year improvements not just in the quality of riders but also turnout and overall professionalism.

On Friday night, competitors, their families and volunteers enjoyed an RDA showjumping competition to mark the introduction of the event as a new core discipline, with prizes donated by Blue Chip. During a packed day of competitions on Saturday – including Dressage, Countryside Challenge, Vaulting, Horse Care & Knowledge, Arts & Crafts, Best Turned Out and Musical Ride – Dressage champion Carl Hester and Merlin actor Tony Head toured the site visiting Groups and volunteers across the showground.

Saturday night saw a demonstration by the BEF explaining the pathway from RDA to world class Para Dressage. Competitions continued on Sunday, concluding with the final prize giving which included presentation of the RDA saddle by The Worshipful Company of Saddlers and the Carl Hester Cup for the dressage rider with the highest percentage across all classes.

One again RDA was well supported by Hartpury College, Subaru, and a host of businesses in the popular Supporters’ Village.

“I hope everyone involved in this year’s Championships feels proud of what they have achieved here,” said Championship Chairman Doug Smith. “Our participants, their families, volunteers and coaches have worked so hard to make the past two days such a great success, and I’d like to thank them all for all their tireless hard work, dedication and determination.”
